Burkina Faso 2016
June 5th, 2016 9am
Sunday is the Lord’s Day! We left the compound on our way to a village church. We had all been anticipating this day for the entire trip because we wanted to worship with the African people and witness an idol burning ceremony. The worship was awesome. Like I said earlier, lots of singing and dancing. All in attendance were making a joyful noise unto the Lord!
We heard stories from the team members in country about how idols still play a big role in the African culture. You and I may dismiss it, but it’s real. And it’s dark. We listened to story after story of people coming up and publicly declaring their end of dependence on idols. That’s actually a big step for some of the people. As a western Christian, we can’t fathom being a Christian but still having “idols” in our house. But, just because their’s is an actual item doesn’t make it any different than those things in our lives that distract us from God. Whether it’s money, work, material things, kids, or whatever, we have more idols in our lives than most of the African people.
After church, we went back to the compound and did a few odds and ins to prepare for our departure. This would be the last night we stay in Burkina Faso. I wanted to go to the market and see if I could find any fabric for Amy to make something with. I didn’t find anything but I did get to experience the market.
The last night was bittersweet: the following morning we would be making the trip back to Ouagadougou to begin the LONG return trip to our loved ones…but we all felt like we would be leaving loved ones behind.
