Burkina Faso 2016

June 4th, 2016 10am

Today is some what of a rest day.  Several of the team members are going to hike Mt. Ioba.  I suppose it would be consider the “Pinnacle Mountain” of the area.  It was quite a hike and one that I probably was ready for.  Hiking up a mountain in the Africa heat almost proved too much for me.  But I am super glad that I went.  Those of us that went definitely worked for the view we received at the end.

Those on the team that opted out of the hike went to a literacy council meeting.  The literacy rate among adults is very low in Burkina Faso.  And Streams in Burkina Faso has been working to help increase literacy in the area.  One of the team members has even been responsible for translating the New Testament into the Dagara language.  Very cool work that they are doing.

In the late afternoon, we were invited to Mr. Berry’s house for tea.  I didn’t really know what to expect other than Mr. Berry (much like a lot of the locals) was Muslim.  That didn’t really worry me at all, was just worried about consuming anything.  LOL!  But we all had a fantastic time and Mr. Berry was a wonderful and gracious host.  The tea, served by his sons, was delicious.  It’s said that to share 1 cup of tea with someone is for acquaintances.  Two cups is for good friends.  Three cups is reserved for those most dear to your heart.  We had 4 cups of tea with Mr. Berry!  Wonderful man with a huge heart.

After leaving Mr. Berry’s house, we returned to the compound for dinner and had a bonfire.  It started to hit home that we would be leaving in a couple of days and a lot of us just weren’t ready.
